Jewish Wedding Officiant Bay Area
“The most important thing about your wedding is you and your partner. My highest priority is to make our Jewish tradition accessible and relevant to you.”
There is no right or wrong way to do a Jewish wedding!
Whatever your level of knowledge and even if you aren’t sure what being Jewish means to you, I am here to help you make this a loving and meaningful event for you and your family. For some, this may mean a very traditional Jewish wedding with lots of Hebrew prayers. For others, it may mean poetry under the chuppah (wedding canopy.)
It will be my privilege to make these traditions accessible and relevant to you.
Do you need a Rabbi for your wedding in San Francisco?
A Jewish wedding can be officiated by anyone. What is most important is finding the right fit for you. I am a rabbi who prioritizes Chesed which means acts of kindness over following the letter of the Jewish law.
This means that I'll work with you to craft a Jewish wedding that best fits your family’s needs and values. The Jewish tradition is here for you, which means that there isn't any one thing that needs to be in your wedding.
As a rabbi, I can help the two of you find meaning. Exploring the Jewish wedding rituals and what they can symbolize is an opportunity for the two of you to talk about what is important to you. And as I learn what is important to you, I can suggest the right amount of Hebrew and the right elements to include in your Jewish wedding.
Do you officiate at queer or interfaith weddings?
As a rabbi I also officiate at queer, bicultural, LGBTQ or Jewish interfaith weddings in the Bay Area. Frankly, even if you are both Jewish, chances are that your Judaisms are not the same. Planning the wedding ritual is part of the ritual.
It is a chance to get to know each other on a deeper level and find traditions and/or innovations that work for both of you.
I am also happy to co-officiate with a clergy member of another faith, and/or to incorporate elements from other religions and cultures.
There is no one right or wrong way to do a Jewish wedding. I would be honored to be a part of yours. If your wedding will be in or near San Francisco let’s talk and see if there is a fit.
What can we expect when we work with you?
First, there is a 30-minute discovery call to see if there is a fit. If you choose me as your Jewish wedding officiant, we’ll meet two to three times starting three to six months before the wedding.
First, I’ll want to get to know you a bit. I’d like to hear how you met, your plans, questions, worries and goals. Once I begin to understand what is important to you, I’ll give an overview of the Jewish wedding ceremony, explaining what does and doesn’t fit with your vision.
The purpose of my suggestions is to empower you to craft the ceremony that reflects not only who you are today, but what kind of marriage and family you’d like to build.
What are the common elements of a Jewish wedding?
A Jewish wedding is very much about family and community. You may select people to hold the poles of the huppah (wedding canopy) or have a free-standing structure built. Both partners are walked down the aisle by their parents.
Whatever the structure of your family, we can adopt this section so it supports you. (I know first-hand how complicated family dynamics can play out during wedding planning.)
The traditional wedding ritual from 2000 years ago is based on commerce, where a husband is purchasing a wife. While some people elect to continue to use that wording, there are some beautiful alternatives that I like better.
